Ms. Famera recently sent us photos of his Art 1 Street Art unit. You can see them here.

The students created Word/Image combinations in the vein of Shepard Fairey's Obey Giant poster. They experimented with phenomenology: Evoking a response from a viewer, either positive or negative.

The artists are aiming to have viewers reflect on their reaction to the image (either intentional or unintentional) and its relationship to the setting it's placed in. Students chose images and words they "identify" with. Then, they began making unrelated word/image combinations, eventually choosing one to pursue in the final project. They then cut original stencils of each word or image, using their own drawings.

The backgrounds were created using a layering of acrylic paint, spread using cardboard. On top of that students sprayed paint on top of areas which included stripes of masking tape, providing an abstract/geometric pattern with depth.

Finally, the stencils were spray painted on top of that using colors determined after experimenting with practice prints.
