On Friday, November 7, Mr. Weaver announced the two winners of the first Dr. Betty Howard: Staff Member of the Month Award.

The Dr. Howard Staff Awards are dedicated to the memory of Dr. Betty Howard who died as a result of a random shooting in June 2013.

Nominations were submitted by students and staff for this award. The four finalists were Ms. Clark, Ms. Wemeling, Ms. Ware and Ms. Lufrano.

Ms. Ware and Ms. Lufrano were selected as the first two recipients of this award.

Here is an excerpt of the nomination submitted for Ms. Clark: "She has the courage to push students, who in turn experience growth as they rise to meet challenges."

Ms. Wermeling was described with, "She gives valuable feedback to students by helping them if they need it, looking over their work and saying when the work is good or bad."

Of Ms. Ware, students and staff said, "In a word, she is amazing ... she occupies a highly visible and demanding position as the face of Brooks for parents and guests ... she has always been calm, welcoming, and impeccably professional in every encounter."

Comments about how Ms. Lufrano was selected included, "She always helps out any student in need, regardless if they're her student or not ... she has positive energy and makes everyone feel comfortable in our learning environment ... of all the teachers at Brooks, she welcomed the new STEM teachers and helped them adapt to the Brooks family."
